Useful context

How to read law firm reviews

Reviews are useful, and they are also the least regulated information about any law firm. A few things worth knowing before you weigh them:

  • Outcome and experience are different. A client can be well represented and still lose, because the facts and the law — not the advocacy — often decide the result.
  • Texas attorneys cannot promise results. Under the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct, no lawyer may guarantee an outcome, and past results do not guarantee a similar outcome.
  • Look for specifics. A review that describes communication, preparation and how surprises were handled tells you more than a five-star rating with no text.
  • Read the responses. How a firm answers criticism is often more informative than the criticism.
