State Bar of Texas
Every attorney's license and disciplinary history can be verified through the State Bar of Texas attorney directory. Ask us for bar card numbers at your consultation.
How to check a Texas lawyer’s record yourself
- Search the State Bar of Texas directory for the attorney’s name to confirm the license status and any public disciplinary history.
- Check board certification separately. Only the Texas Board of Legal Specialization certifies specialties in Texas; other “specialist” labels are marketing.
- Ask who will appear in court. The attorney you meet is not always the attorney at the hearing. Ask, and get the answer in writing.
- Read the fee agreement. Rates, retainer handling, expenses and what happens to unused funds should all be in the document.
You don't have to go through this alone
